Girl Like This is the debut from Laura Roppé. Laura is a singer/songwriter who sang growing up in high school musical productions and obtained a degree in Theatre Arts from UCLA.
She got away from music for a while to pursue other avenues like, a legal career, happy, marriage and motherhood. But music was in her blood so in 2006, Laura became the lead singer of a cover band named CoolBandLuke and her passion for music was reborn.
In May 2008 Laura entered country superstar Kenny Chesney’s Next Big Star competition sponsored by a local radio station, and her song “Mama Needs A Girls Night Out,” was selected as runner up in the competition.
“Mama Needs A Girls Night Out,” is an upbeat fun country rocker that has become an anthem for women with children. Laura gets e-mail from women around the globe that have heard her song and can relate to it.
Another upbeat rocker is, “Free,” the song Laura says is autobiographical and deals with overcoming fear and willing to take the risk necessary to get free from the, ‘corporate treadmill.’
You also find poignant moments like in the song, “Float Away,” a song that deals with a woman who’s at the end of her rope and the only thing keeping her going is her love for her little girl.
“Little Daughter,” is a song that Laura dedicates to her own daughters. The song deals with what would you tell your children about what they needed to do to live a good life if you only had five minutes left to talk with them.
This release offers up several different styles of music in the songs including pop, rock, and folk but you’ll also find a base of a country sound found on several of the songs.
In her press material she says, “…I can sing everything from soul to rock, but country is the most natural vibe for me to write and sing. It’s where my heart and soul is.”
I really liked what Laura Roppé offers up on Girl Like This. She’s a strong woman with a good singing voice that shines brightly on this release.
I think that fans of pop, rock, country and singer songwriter will all enjoy this release with its variety of musical styles.
