The Loose Hinges- ‘Self-Titled’ Review
By C.W. Ross
The Nashville based duo, The Loose Hinges, is multi-instrumentalist and well known producer (Old Crow Medicine Show, Shack Shakers) Eliot Houser and vocalist Kris McCarthy.
The eleven tracks that make up ‘The Loose Hinges’, range in style from Cuban and country folk to rock, pop and even some techno.
That techno sound is found on the releases first track,”Out of the Sun,” a song that’s filled with hypnotic percussive beats that run throughout it along with dreamy vocals from Kris McCarthy.
Other tracks that caught my attention include, “Just Say It”, a Cuban music track that’s filled with lively trumpet parts. I also like the rocking track, “What You Watin’ For”, that lets Eliot Houser cut loose with his guitar playing along with vocals that let Kris McCarthy show her grittier side.
Things also end on a strong note with the rich guitar track, “Oh Boy,” that offers up shared vocals with a roots rock style with a blues undertone sound.
Review Takeaway: With the unusually wide range of music styles that are found on the The Loose Hinges’ debut release things could have easily ended up going bad quickly but thanks to the impressive vocals from Kris McCarthy and the many talents of Eliot Houser in the end what you get is a musical bouquet that works well.
