Music Review for Tidewater’s (Brett Allen) ‘The Beautiful Life’ EP

Tidewater- ‘The Beautiful Life’ EP Review

By C.W. Ross

The man behind Tidewater is multi-talented singer-songwriter Brett Allen (vocals, electric and acoustic guitars, bass, piano, mandolin, and banjo). Allen co-penned the three songs that make up, ‘The Beautiful Life’ along with Kevin Gales (additional programming and instrumentation). Gales produced the EP and has worked with well known artist like, Sarah McLachlan, Bob Seger, Fiona Apple, Courtney Love, Faith Hill and the Dixie Chicks. Rounding out the musician’s list for the EP is Kenny Aronoff on drums (John Mellencamp, Avril Lavign).

The track, “Not Just Any Love”, will be the first radio single from the EP and gets things off to a strong start. The melodic track features rich string parts along with lyrics that deal with God’s special love that’s available for us if we’re only willing to accept it.

Next up is the title track, “The Beautiful Life,” that has a very distinctive electronic element found on it.

The aptly named closing track, “Desire,” deals with the negative effects that come from living a life of self wants and desires. The track offers up sharp, crisp notes along with some electronic effects.

Review Takeaway: ‘The Beautiful Life’ EP is a nice little musical snack that will hold Tidewater fans over until their full length CD releases in late spring/early summer. The EP will be available for sale at online digital outlets starting on January 24, 2012.
