Band of Skulls- ‘Sweet Sour’ Review
By C.W. Ross
‘Sweet Sour,’ is the sophomore effort from the alternative rock band from Southampton, England Band of Skulls. The band deploys a shared lead vocals attack plan from band members, Emma Richardson (bass & vocals) and Russell Marsden (guitar & vocals) on their songs. Their style range from melodic to hard edged with the help of band drummer Matt Hayward keeping everything on track.
Songs that stood out for me include the title track, “Sweet Sour,” a nice up-tempo song that offers up some nice heavy drum and guitar work. It’s also the first U.S. single from the album.
Other highlight tracks include, “Wanderluster,” that offers up an interesting repetitive guitar part. “Devil Takes Care Of His Own,” a hard edged rocker. It’s definitely the hardest rock sounding track on the album. And “You Aren’t Pretty But You Got It Going On,” this song, with the less then flattering title, offers up a fast paced rock sound complete with speed drumming.
Review Takeaway: I really like the way Band of Skulls mixes up the lead vocals on the songs that make up their latest release, ‘Sweet Sour,’ that both keep it fresh and entertaining. Also the special iTunes version of the release will include the bonus track “Such A Fool.”
