What are your thoughts on Johnstown being a hot bed for talented musicians?
(Mary Borkow) “Thank you for your interest in the Roxbury Bandshell……We are definitely a Hot Bed for local musicians showcasing their volunteer time and talents for the benefit of our community.”
About the Roxbury Bandshell:
The history behind the Roxbury Bandshell is a long and interesting one. It was built in the 1930’s under President Roosevelt’s Works Progress Administration. It opened officially in 1939.
After many years of use the structure started to show it’s age and was slated to be demolished in 2005 in order to make a parking lot for the Roxbury Park where it’s located. I know it sounds like something taken right out of Joni Mitchell’s, “Big Yellow Taxi,” (‘They paved paradise to put up a parking lot.’)
Those who say you can’t fight government or at least work with them and change their mind haven’t met the dedicated group of volunteers who make up the Roxbury Bandshell Preservation group. They stepped in and after several court battles a long term agreement stopping the demolition and allowing them to operate the bandshell was reached.
The group holds fundraisers throughout the year along with hosting a free weekly summer concert series every Sunday from 5:00 to 7:00 PM sponsored by AmeriServ Financial Bank.
The concerts are free to attend and you’ll have a chance to hear a wide range of music styles from some very talented musicians.
So if your in the Johnstown area during the Summer months circle Sunday on your calendar, bring your lawn chair and get ready to hear some good music while enjoying the nice fresh outdoor air and sunshine at the Roxbury Bandshell.
