Toe tapping, head nodding, killer harmonies, Liverpool bands really do seem to have a monopoly on it all. Born and bred Liverpool five-piece, The Hummingbirds have steadily been building a following in their home town on the Mersey with over 30,000 followers on their Social Media platforms (You Tube/ Facebook/ Twitter), making wavesNationwide when they launched their debut EP ‘Out Of The Rain’ in November ’15.
The band have become widely celebrated and much loved in their home city of Liverpool, where they easily command sellout status at the 02 Academy. Their almost insanely melodic song craft has made them the modern-day exponents of the Mersey sound, a rich tradition stretching back to the days when the Beatles swept the city, and then the world, before them. The Hummingbirds’ deliver a 21st Century take on that heritage, sprinkled with elements of Americana.
Think of the hooks of the Fab Four of ‘64, the harmonies of the Hollies circa ‘Sorry Suzanne’ and the jangling guitar landscapes of early Eagles, and you’re somewhere near. Yet, after honing their style on stage and in the studio, the group they sound like most is the Hummingbirds.
Well on their way to breaking the airwaves this year, these 23 year old independent, industrious working class boys Jay Davies (lead vocals / guitar) Mic Kountis (guitar / backing vocals) Matty Brougham (rhythm guitar) Ryan Lewis (bass) and Richard Smith (drums / backing vocals) are already, unashamedly, drawing comparisons to these greats – maybe it’s the accents, the canny Scouse wit, the harmonies or the country rhythms – either way the comparisons are unavoidable.
Their debut album ‘Pieces Of You’ will be released on their own label, Gladstone Recording Co. at the end of March, featuring their up-tempo new single ‘Knocking On My Door’, along with the title track of harmonious, melancholic blues and their debut release ‘Out Of The Rain’.
With their feel good tunes and songs of love and heartbreak they are already selling out their live gigs, leaving their ever-increasing audiences screaming for more. With Bush Hall tickets now sold out, The Hummingbirds will be taking time out of their busy day jobs to tour in February, then playing at Festivals including The Great Escape in May and Citadel in July, with an Album Launch at the Buyer’s Club in Liverpool on 27th March and a very special London Launch yet to be announced!
