With the first full weekend of NCAA softball done here’s a quick round up of the teams I’ll be covering this year. Being in the Northeast it’s hard to find any games carried live on either local TV or radio. So most of the games I’ll be catching via the Internet or Satellite TV.
As of now the teams I’ll mainly be writing about are; Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Tennessee and Texas.
First up is Texas who started off their season by winning all five of their games played at home in the Texas Classic. They done it in come from behind fashion in 4 of the 5 games. Although they weren’t playing top ranked teams it still showed that they have strong pitching that will get even better when they get starting picture Erica Wright back in the pitching rotation who has so far had to cheer for the team from the bench this season due to a rib injury. I got to watch all of the games via their Longhorn Network.
Unfortunately the rest of the teams I only got to read about, listen to via Internet radio or through Gametracker.
It looks like Auburn coach Clint Myers has his team starting this year right where they left off last year a hitting Juggernaut scoring 22 runs against Appalachian State on Sunday, 28 runs over opponent Butler on Saturday and on the previous night they rang up 19 runs against Western Kentucky. In an interview Clint Myers said that the other teams gave them a lot via walks and that the team is a lot better then they played. If that’s true it’s gonna be a long year for anyone playing against Auburn.
Alabama has gotten off to a 4-1 start with their one lose coming at the hands of 17th ranked UCF 8-1. Alabama once again seems to have a team that features a nice balance of steady pitching and hitting. Look for them to have another good year.
Tennessee has gotten off to a 4-2 start this season with the two losses coming at the hands of powerhouse the Arizona Sun Devils along with Fresno State. On the positive side it looks like Vols pitcher Erin Gabriel is in fine form recording over 30 strikeouts already this year. Teammate Megan Geer has been providing much of the offense for the team.
Last but not least is projected three peat Champions the powerful Florida Gators. The Gators showed that once again their for real and ready to take a run at another championship this year with a impressive 5 innings win over #2 ranked Michigan. I haven’t gotten to see the team play yet but am looking forward to it.
So that’s it for this week’s softball wrap up.
